Most Admired International

Gareth Edwards (even though he is Welsh!) he showed tenacity & guile in every game & was a perfect ambassador for the game.

Most Admired Witney Player
(There are a few) Geoff Cranville for being a mentor (if you read this Geoff, I never did say thank you, so Thank You). Martin Hobley, for his never say die attitude & friendship. John Shears & George Sears, almost a perfect back row. Mark Godfrey for never underachieving, the Wilsker brothers for performing week in & week out. JC for being the immovable object, likewise in a similar vain was Wally Holbrough.

Favourite Rugby Tour "Cardiff, way back when? Four of "us young 'uns", M.Hobley, A.Cannons, A.Holbrough & myself ventured forth to Wales. This was an eye opener!! It can be remembered for an embarrasing moment for D.Wicks, having been dragged from our beds by J. Shears (who was also our school teacher at the time) to show us what can happen if we overdo the liquid refreshment! I believe it was D. Alldredge doing an impression of Linford Christie one evening while M. Godfrey decided he would take care of some business with half a dozen locals, so we helped out! Froggie eating a chicken whole, while jumping out at passing cars as he "shot them dead!!?". Being picked up by the collar against Llandaff by their number eight, after I had dived on one of their players tring to get to his feet with the ball, I think the term he used questioned my parentage and threatened my rugby career!!! The rest of the tour wasn't bad either!"

Most Embarrassing moment on the Pitch "Game at Supermarine, as captain I had mentioned being disciplined to the team and not giving away any silly penalties, only to get involved in a minor altercation near the end of the game and give away a penalty which won them the game. I didn't think JC would ever forgive me."
Most Embarrasing moment off the Pitch "After an away game (wherever),& a few beers, being dropped at the Rose & Crown in Shilton, and singing the evening away. It was pointed out to me much later in the evening, that my lack of underwear was evident as my zip had broken (unbeknown to me) but not to the ladies of the pub!!"

Best Match for Witney "First XV debut against University Vandals on the old reck field on Oxford Hill."
Worst Match for Witney "There weren't any, they were all fun win or lose."
Best Try for Witney "Putting JC in for two tries on his club debut at home (v Stow?)."

How to improve training "Players need better comarardarie off the field, so they want to work together on the field. Always be positive."

Remaining Rugby Ambitions "Continue to grow as a coach and referee. Continue to contribute to the game in the USA. Win the lottery and return to England."

Miscellaneous "Finally, my rugby history/life would not be complete without mentioning the one person who has lived and breathed Witney rugby for many years in one capacity or another. He may not be the quickest player on two legs (although he has been known to have a burst of speed over 5 meters) but he can certainly throw an outrageous dummy & side step at the same time, which is more than some backs can do. His leadership skills have come to the fore many times both on and off the field, his genuine by many, and never once have I heard "I don't have time". To me, if there was an award for Clubman of the past Century, which would personify the game of rugby and for all the great things it stands for at Witney rugby club, then that award should be presented to, Nick Godfrey."
