Witney 17 – 20 Slough (
PHOTOS)Some superb defence from Slough late on in the match was enough to give them their first League win of the season and leave Witney with no wins at home. Witney had a poor first half and even though they had plenty of opportunities to get points on the board they only had one successful penalty out of half a dozen attempts. In the meantime Slough went over for two tries and this resulted in them holding a 3-12 interval lead which soon became 3-17 as they scored right after the break. Two sin bins from Slough gave Witney the chance to claw themselves back into the match and this they did with tries from Phil Gouldie and James Monks and a conversion and penalty from Ed Mitchem – who had taken over the kicking duties from the out of sorts Henry Lamb. Slough got a penalty to regain the lead but with time running out Witney threw everything at the visitors but their defence was excellent and they held on for a fine away win.
The first half was an odd affair with Witney enjoying the territory and possession but they were all a bit lethargic and there was no real zip to their play. Wayne Caffekey (left) had some strong runs but they never really put together any really threatening phases. That said, they did have the territorial advantage and despite an earlier miss, Henry Lamb gave the home side the advantage after 15 minutes. This kickstarted the Slough team into action and they found themselves camped on the Witney line. Witney twice held the visitors up over the line but it was third time lucky as their fly half darted over despite a good tackle from Phil Gouldie. The lineouts were going well for Witney with Simon Chatterton, Jez Hicks and Wayne Caffekey all taking good ball from some accurate throwing from young Sam Collins, so possession was good but chances were not really being created. Alan Richens almost scored but was driven back at the last minute and Carl Strutt should probably have backed himself in a sprint out wide but no scores came.
It was the next 15 minutes that probably decided Witneys fate as they missed 4 penalty chances of varying degrees of diffculty and Slough started growing in confidence as a result. They created an overlap for their pacey right winger and he showed excellent finishing skills to score under the posts. The successful conversion made it 3-12 to the good for the visitors and they sensed an away scalp was theirs for the taking. It almost looked inevitable when their forwards trundled over just after halftime after Witney made a hash of receiving the kick off.
Slough had been testing the referees patience with persistent offences and after instructing them a final warning just before halftime, their second row was a touch unlucky when he failed to roll away in the tackle and had to spend the next 10 minutes off the pitch. Slough then did themselves no favours when their scrum half took Henry Lamb out after his chip over the top and he two was given a ten minute sabbatical!
Quite often having a player or two advantage is not capitalised on but thankfully Jez Hicks’s team did make it count in their favour this time round. The forwards set up good field position and Sam Collins sniped round the side to touch down, Ed Mitchem (right) added the extras to give the home side a lifeline. Slough were under the cosh but Witney knew they needed another score but it looked unlikely until a Slough kick to touch was missed. A quick throw in saw the ball spun out wide and James Monks took it at on at pace. He found the space and broke through a couple of tackles before taking another defender over the line, Mitchem adding the two points and levelling the scores.
At this point, the visitors needed to dig deep but they showed great determination and as well as having some strong defence also passed the ball around pretty well. Witney started to up their game too with Henry Lambs great break gaining 20 metres before brother James powered on for another 30 metres but support was too slow in getting to the tackle area and the chance was gone. Louie Collins had one great break on the outside but two Slough players somehow managed to get across and bundle him into touch.
Slough kicked a penalty to give them the initiative again but the last 5 minutes was all Witney as they gave their all to give the home supporters something to cheer. Carl Strutt almost got over as did James Monks and a tap tackle felled Phil Gouldie when he had made a half break and had clear space in front of him. In the end the final whistle went and the visitors were jubilant with their first League points of the season.

Ouch! – another home defeat and a pretty odd match. Witney could have established a convincing lead had those first half kicks gone over but fair play to Slough I thought they played some good stuff and showed good character not to let the game slip when Witney levelled the scores. Those tackles that went in on Witney in the last ten minutes of the match must have please their coaches too. The second half was much better for Jez and the boys and they hopefully will learn that level of passion and commitment is needed from the opening whistle and not from 14 points down. The lineouts went well, the backs ran some good lines and the discipline was excellent but they have to believe in their own abilities and sometimes back themselves – and probably some work still to do on fitness too.

As the game went on the pack began to become more dominant, lineout and scrum were now solid after an intermittent start. Youngster Ben ‘shorts’ Quayle (left) enjoyed another fine game at scrum half, as he barked and controlled his pack well. Those experienced flankers Tim Muller and Will Worrell both enjoyed fine returns to action, with the latter picking up a try in the corner after a catch and drive from our lineout. Fresh legs were introduced in the last twenty minutes with Richard Haire, Toby Perry and Chris Murray all adding to the Witney win. The Murray "monster" in particular dazzled the Windsor back line with one or two of those gliding slow motion runs of his, (those old swaying hips are still very deceiving). After the hour point the spirited visitors finally began to tire, allowing Witney to take full control, which resulted in two penalties for in form flyhalf George Bibby (right). These shots at goal took the game out of Windsor’s grasp and shortly afterwards the final whistle blew and our good start to the season continued.

Aylesbury 2nds 18 - 31 Witney 3rds
Another weekend of sun saw Witney on their travels for the first time this season. The traffic was so bad in Aylesbury that we arrived with only 20 minutes until KO. This was just enough time for most of us to change and stretch but also for Brillo to inspect and comment on the pitch markings and for Jamie to buy a pint.
The main talk in the pre match cuddle was not to repeat our start last week and to front up from the off. Showing we're not as stupid as we all look everybody took this on board and there were no such problems this week. The first 5 minutes saw Witney on the back foot as Aylesbury started the game with intense running by their forwards off the number 10. They made good ground but found the Witney defence weren't going to let them in for an early score. Instead they settled for 3 points and felt they had already gained momentum in the match. Witney however had other ideas as from the restart great play by the forwards won a penalty 35 yards out which Dan Wheeler put
straight between the posts. What followed for the remainder of the half was some of the best rugby the 3's will play all season. The pack were coming out on top in the battle for the set pieces and especially in the loose where people were going in pods and no-one was going off alone and getting caught. The backs controlled by Remy, Dan and Nathan were varying their play and showing pace through Kenna, Ricki and Brucie. The first try came following a super blind side break by Will Hook. Although he was unable to find the supporting Remy, both Tim Hands and Brucie snapped up the loose ball from the Aylesbury defender and following a few pick and drives Brillo (left) crashed over for his first of the season. Next it was a classic dummy followed by a burst of speed from Remy which saw him put in Will who still had a lot of work to do but managed to somehow stretch out his arm from about 5 meters out to get the ball on the line with a defender around his ankles for his first of the season. Not wanting to miss out, yet more great play from the pack saw Tim Hands (right) also cross to score, again (i think) for his first of the season. And then just to finish the half, Dan hit another penalty to help sink Aylesbury heads a bit further. Turning round at half time we know that more of the same for the next 20 would kill off the game completely. Disappointingly though we instead let Aylesbury in to score one for themselves. However the response was good. Although we didn't play as well as we had done in the first half 2 further tries put the game to bed. The first saw the pack turn over ball from a maul and the backs spun it right along the line with Kenna coming in also to create an overlap for the flying Ricki to score his first Witney try. Later a quick tap from Kenna caught Aylesbury napping and with bodies everywhere Nathan put up a huge kick in to the 22 where the bounce fell kindly to Dan who draw the man and put in the supporting Brucie for his first of the season. After this score the ref told us 5 minutes left and we seemed to just completely switch off allowing Aylesbury 2 late scores. This took the gloss off the victory a bit, but hopefully like the lesson we learnt last week we'll take this on board and learn from it. Though early days we are currently 4th in the league on points difference and if we can maintain this throughout the year then a fun enjoyable season lies ahead. As I didn't mention it above we had another Witney virgin in Andy Clevely who played his first Witney game and did himself proud, well done Andy.

The fourths first win of the season was not without incident as we travelled to Chippy for a friendly, well lets face facts, it was never going to a friendly was it! A few players who haven’t played for a while having a run around meant as a friendly we could take a few player position gambles and as it turns out it paid off! Witney started really well and two returning players Ben Morris and Tony Postie made a lot of ground from the start in the centres and things looked good then something happened and Chippy slipped by and scored 20 mins into the game. The try converted we were shocked and 7-0 down! Still stunned and in shock, silly mistakes were made and then a penalty just out our 22 saw them go 10-0 up! Witney realised if they didn’t get their heads on we again will lose to a worse side. With that, we made our way up the field and the forwards took a drive to the line with Chippy battling the drive Mike Hourigan peeled off the back wandered across the line and put the ball down before they even knew what was going on. With Witney scoring and the heat raised more penalties were given away and a ref on only his 3rd English game struggling to keep control Witney struggled to give 10 on quick penalties the struggling ref had warned a few times then Jakob made the same mistake and was shown a yellow! 14 men played to half time and the score 10-5. Again in the second half Witney came together and with 15 men dominated the field, Chippy started to give little punches and pinches that the ref didn’t notice and was not liking Witney winning every scrum, it wasn’t long before Clive Manning scored, Clive…. Score… No that one had to be disallowed, so for the second week in a row Clive’s had a try disallowed think he’s going for the most trys disallowed in a season award. Tempers raised more and it only took a Chippy player to elbow Nick Mason in the face for what seemed a 30 man scrap to start the ref not knowing what to do he just yellowed both players seeing Witney get there 2nd and Chippy there1st yellow of the game. During the 14 man aside game returning after a long injury absence Ben Morris scored a well earned try after running some good lines and making a lot of ground, 10-10 seemed better but we should be winning by a lot more with missed chances so 5mins before full time we were thankful for another forwards drive which saw Ski go over the line to score, another well deserved try by a very active player getting back into the game, although he did give credit (and rightly so) to Bill Q who was holding up every maul no matter how many men were in there.

The match kicked off in beautiful sunshine and the question from the Witney travelling support was if the bulkier Swindon pack would last the pace and if the Witney forwards could front up and win some good ball. When young hooker Sam Collins (left) found Simon Chatterton in the first lineout, the omens were good and in the first scrum Rikki Dore and Mark Serle got a nudge on the home side. With set piece looking fairly even, the lose exchanges would be crucial and tearaway flankers Marc Copperwheat and Wayne Caffekey were the dominant force in the open play with Caffekey making some trademark runs and Copperwheat some big tackles to stop some Swindon attacks dead in their tracks. Caffekey was the opening try scorer after some fine work from Adam Hicks and Tom Whelan. Henry Lambs successful conversion was good news but Whelan had to limp off the pitch straight after but his misfortune was Ed Mitchem’s gain as he nearly had a full match to impress the coaches. He slotted in at full back with Hicks moving to the wing.
The forwards were working hard as a unit and the ball was steady for Phil Gouldie to feed his backline where Henry Lamb’s (right) decision making was generally good all match. Another try came after Swindon were caught in defence and a couple of slick passes saw scrum half Gouldie scamper over and the home side starting to feel frustrated. If their supporters thought things were bad at that point, they soon saw them get even worse. Witney kicked to the corner and won the resulting lineout, a drive infield saw Witney pile over the try line and the legend that is Mark “Norm” Serle emerge with the ball and a fairly rare score for the veteran prop. Lamb again converted and it was all smiles for Witney.
Repl : Mitchem(Whelan-10), Ashford(Serle-50), Rowland(J)(Chatterton-70)
Phil Gouldie had a good match in the unaccustomed position of scrum half, Ed Mitchem had a nice match at full back and showed some classy touches. Indeed, all the backs did some good things but the match was really won in the forward battle and while the back row of Copperwheat, Caffekey and Hicks may have caught the eye more than others, the unseen graft of the tight five was as crucial as anything.
A much better performance and hopefully this will be a good stepping stone for the rest of the season which starts next week at the Hailey Road Ground against Slough.
For the second week in a row Witney 2nds produced another astonishing display of rugby! When Robbie Mills took a quick tap and darted over, catching the Bracknell defense with their pants down, it completed a remarkable come back. On the side lines it was all smiles on the faces of Merriman and Godfrey, however this had not been the case an hour earlier, as we found ourselves 19 points down AND had we not picked up out game we could have been on the end of a real spanking!
From a George Bibby restart (his third in 10 minutes) we finally claim possession, which allowed us to launch our first real attack of the afternoon. Gradually we worked through the phases and brought ourselves back into the game. Dave Moriarty (left) was proving once again what an attacking force he can be, as a number of times he broke through tackles when returning loose kicks from the Bracknell back line. Our front five of Danny Godfrey, Brad Grobalar, Mark Fuller, Simon Copperwheat and Toby Perry were beginning to apply pressure on the opposing heavy weight pack. Also Charlie Bennett was jumping well at four and winning us some excellent ball in the lineout. After this sustained pressure the home team conceded a penalty, which was converted by "Copper". Straight from the restart we headed back into the Bracknell half, playing a quick ruck game and off loading in the tackle, which now seemed to be working well. From one of these off loads, Mo Dewey received the ball and the solid South African showed an excellent turn of pace to power over three tacklers and score, (very reminiscent of former South African winger Chester Williams). With the try converted, half time came and the chance of a well earned water break!! Well it was hot.
We began the second half as we had ended the first, pressuring the home team and making crucial first up tackles. With captain "Fish" away on yet another all expenses paid jolly, the new centre pairing of Matt Hood and Robbie Mills were setting a fine example in midfield. We began to feel the tide was turning our way, when inside 15 minutes we had kicked another penalty and Matt Hood had crashed over, taking two men with him, for an excellent first try in the blue and black of Witney. We also had the referee on our side as the penalties and free kicks started to come. We continued to play some excellent phases in attack and everything Bracknell tried was thwarted, even our glamorous physio Laura played her part, as she was bowled over when one of their players was hammered into touch. The introduction of backrow specialists Rory Cookson (right)and Joe Rowles brought fresh legs and in Joe's case a fresh knee. This also gave us more enthusiasm and attacking options, as the latter was playing his first game in nearly two years,( it was like you were never away Joe)! Also on a number of times Rory broke through their defense, showing again what a threat he can be. As I mentioned earlier, when Robbie Mills dived over for his try, the come back was almost complete. However a slight drop in concentration then allowed Bracknell in for an unconverted try, leading to a few more uncomfortable minutes, but finally the whistle blew for full time. Sadly there was no celebration, as half the team were unsure of the final score, despite the ref telling them the result and there was still more debate in the changing room afterwards!
There was no "Kevin the chicken" awarded this week, due to the superb performances by everyone involved in the comeback.
A great second half comeback from Witney saw the home crowd entertained as the 3's played host to Banbury 2's. With both teams winning by similar margins on the first weekend this was an early top of the table clash. You wouldn't have thought it though in the first half as Witney weren't just slow out of the blocks they were poor with many missed tackles and penalties given away. This played into Banbury's hands as they looked to run everything and take advantage of their quick big backs. This saw them race into a 3 try lead.
The turning point was after the third soft try went over they started to laugh and joke amongst themselves. This woke Witney up and seemed to stir some Witney pride into the boys. From the restart a great tackle by Nick Rumbles saw the ball turned over to Witney and from the resulting scrum Gareth Williams (left)went over to start the come back. Playing down the slope in the second half Witney realised that keeping the ball in tight and walking down the park worked wonders with the experienced forwards coming out way on top in that battle. All you kept hearing from the Banbury backs were calls of "pull it down, pull it down". With the pack getting us in the right areas Witney were able to do some damage with their own backs this time. First the ever green Remmie (right) twisted and turned and forced this way over with a great one arm stretch to just reach the line. Next Witney called for the Burkes machine and he once again proved unstoppable as he left 3 defenders on the floor to score his second try of the season. Soon after with all the defenders waiting for Jamie again Pete through the dummie and broke a tackle to score under the posts. Unfortunatly at some point inbetween these scores Banbury scored another try of their own following more good pace from their backs. This left Witney chasing the winning score. After bombarding the Banbury line with the final play of the game the overlap was generated and the ball went out only to go to ground and get knocked on. Such small margines between success and failure, winners beer and drowning your sorrows. The Banbury players were delighted to come away with the points and we were gutted to have lost out. If we had played to our best for the whole match and not just the second half we would have won this. Hopefully next week this will be remembered. A quick mention for new boy Mark (sorry, I don't know your surname) who had a great game and hopefully will stick around.

With Chinnor at the club ready for a game we got the news we had no ref! So with player Mike Hourigan willing to step in as ref we put to Chinnor the option of play the legue game or postpone and play a friendly, They went for the friendly option,
It was a close match with the sides very evenly matched, the score remaind nothing all until the last play of the first half when Chinnor scored a try, left unconverted a half time score of 0-5 wasn’t bad. The second half much like the first with some players coming back for the first game for a while as subs. Witney looked the better side however a few small errors cost us what could have been a couple of easy trys.but eventually it came together and Alan run over a try, again left unconverted we were back in the game. Spending a lot of time in there half not long after a great forwards maul see Clive Manning (left) who seemed to get everywhere the ball was (think he had loads of sugar before the game)) Score, only to be unbelievably disallowed by the ref (wait till next week Mike!). Still Witney Battled but nothing came, Clive again getting to the ball from a 20 yard dash only to be robbed by the bounce seemed to show our luck had run out so after givin a silly penalty away and only 5 mins left of two even teams Chinnor went for the easy 3 points to get the win, this gives us hope for the rescedualed legue match and our away game to them, the friendly helping us out points wise and a good game in the nice new kit (see right).

Witney 10 – 27 Buckingham (PHOTOS)
A draw and a win for Witney last season and a decent pre-season meant that the confidence was fairly high for a good start in the League against old foes Buckingham. A new look threequarter line for the visitors though saw them look far sharper in the first 40 minutes and to be honest the 3-15 deficit at halftime could have been worse. To their credit though, Witney fronted up well in the second half and a Phil Gouldie try gave them a glimmer of hope before the visitors scored again late on to give them a deserved win and Witney with much to ponder.

The match kicked off at a decent pace and the two sides tested each other out and the visitors kicked an early penalty. The early scrums looked pretty promising for Witney with Rikki Dore and Mark Serle scrimmaging strongly but as the match wore on, cracks began to show and scrum half Aaron Tustin (left) did a great job with his forwards being far too lose and he did his best to give the backs some decent ball to work with. If the Buckingham forwards were gaining priority in the scrums then their lineout was certainly making life difficult for Witney. After a magnificent match last weekend, flanker Carl Campbell (right) had to leave the field after 10 minutes with a rib injury and his phenomenal workrate and lineout presence was sorely missed.
Buckingham ramped up the gears and a great line break in midfield set up field position deep in Witneys half and despite some good work from the back three of Gouldie, Collins and Hicks, Buckingham had support coming at pace and crossed for a try. The conversion made it 10 points adrift for Witney but a Henry Lamb penalty reduced the deficit. Shortly before halftime Buckingham scored again and their strong running centre showed good pace to fly down the outside and leave Witney knowing they had to up through the gears to a avoid a rout as the visiting backs were being allowed to look a class above.
A few home truths were told in the interval by coaches Campbell and Harper and they will have been pleased with the players response. The forwards started to front up and a couple of storming runs in the lose gave them heart as did a couple of big tackles from Mark Serle and James Lamb. Skipper Jez Hicks really gave his all to raise his teams game but they cohesion was not really there as the many changes told. Individually the lads did OK but collectively they didn’t in too many areas. That said, they spent most of the first twenty minutes of the second half in the oppositions 22 but struggled to find many holes in a well organised defence. Buckingham broke from their own half and scored against the run of play and that looked to make the result inevitable. Soon after from around halfway though Witney turned the ball over and slick handling released Phil Gouldie who raced past one and then stepped the remaining defence to score a cracker under the posts. Henry Lamb added the extras and there was hope of a comeback.
Buckingham stuttered a bit and had a lot to say to the referee but they still had the trump cards in the set piece and began to pressurise Witney again. Flanker Tim Muller was the unlucky player to get a yellow card after consistent offences and from the resulting scrum Witney were driven back, the ball went wide and the visitors crossed to put the game beyond doubt. The final whistle went but while Buckingham left with optimism huge Witney know they have to notch it up to get results this year.

Henley Wanderers 2nds 7 - 25 Witney 2nds (PHOTOS)
Witney 2nd team opened up there league account with a fine victory over bogie team Henley Wanderers, losing twice to them last year made this victory sweet. Straight from kick off we were in a dominant position, George Bibby kicking well and putting us in good field position, as he did all day. The pack were beginning to turn the screw the front five were working hard in the tight and the back row were winning excellent ball on the floor, Jason Rowland in particular showing well. We were really beginning to press forward, with every attack and phase we had we were getting closer, eventually the break came coming from James Taafe (left). After several phases of play, good interlinking between back and forwards resulting in Copperwheat and Bibby combined to send The Mighty Taafe in. Copper then increased the lead with two penalties stretching there lead to 11 points. But in typical Witney style we let them in for a score just before half time, a combination of bad decisions and a couple of missed tackles allowed them in for a converted try. At half time one change was made the impressive Mo Dewey was replaced by tear away flanker Wayne Caffekey. Once again straight from kick off we were in charge and playing on the front foot, from a period of sub stained pressure Taafe collected his second try of the afternoon. From a loose bouncing pass James scooped the ball up and showed excellent pace and power to cross the line, the conversion was added by Copper. Soon after the games was close out from a score by Caffekey. From a lineout catch and drive and few phases through the backs, Wayne was the benefactor as he charged over from short range, Copper converted. Kevin the chicken was won by the highly impressive Dave Moriarty.
Witney 3rds 31 - 8 Chesham
A great start to the season for Ran's team. The sun was out, we played some great rugby and we won. You could be forgiven in thinking that Ran had accidently put together a Vets team after reading the first 10 names on the score sheet. However with some youth (those under 30) and pace in the backs it turned into a good balance. The first 10 minutes were fairly close with both teams still trying to recover from the warm up in blazing sun. Slowly witney started to get the upper hand in the set piece and the loose allowing them to release the backs to open their legs. The first try was made by the timing of the pass from Franny and the run of Matt Calley who went through 2 tackles to put down in under the posts. Later in the half some good pressure saw Franny take the 3 points to extend the lead. The last 10 mins of the half saw Witney under huge pressure as Chesham pushed to get some points on the board. After some great defence they had to settle for 3 points. A few minutes later and Witney were touching down at the other end. A poor kick from Chesham found Kenna instead of touch. He beat one man then chipped the other 3 tacklers before the bounce popped the ball back into his mits to dive over and with Franny on form this saw the half time score at 17 - 3. Witney started the half as if the game was already won and were punished as Chesham made good ground down the blind side and scored a well deserved try for their efforts. This was the wake up call Witney needed and soon after a great move down the line saw Russ out sprint his man to get another 7 points on the board. With the game starting to fizzle out Witney scored a superb try that will be hard to beat all season. A fantasic blind side break from the excellant Gareth Williams saw him then play a great one - two with Paddy to beat 3 men. He then found Damian who seemed to glide over the ground as he jinked his way towards the line. With Remmie, Russ and the late arriving Andy Moriarty in support it was then striaght hands for Andy to touch down in the corner, only about 15 seconds after coming on. (good sub Ran). Franny again got the touchline kick to see the score finish 31 - 8. In truth Witney should have scored more in the last 10 minutes as Jamie Burke (right) came on to cause complete distruction. His first touch saw him get the ball in his own 22 only to then quite literaly run over at least 6 - 7 players on his way down the pitch much to the delight of the home crowd. Unfortunatly he was brought down by the very last tackler who seemed to be lying on the ground at the time, which to be honest is as low as you need to get if you want to get past that belly to his legs. Next up is the current league leaders, Bunbury II's which will be a much bigger test.

For the first 15-20 minutes of the game the 4ths looked strong spending the entire time in Banbury’s half. Then Banbury’s number 15 seemed to surprise everyone with how quick he was and soon they had points on the board, this shock seemed to have set in for the rest of the first half and at half time the score stood 28-0! Some hard work was going to be needed, and hard work was certainly put in for Witney. In the second half we came together and played very well, some good runs by Nick Rumbles at number 12 who gave us a lot of yards. The pack worked much harder in what was becoming a hot afternoon and won a lot more ball for Nick Mason (left) to feed to Pete and the rest of the backs. It wasn’t too long before Leigh Manning, who was showing the summer break hasn’t slowed him down with some good kicking and chasing, ran over the line with the ball given to him unselfishly by Scott who looked good to score but wanted to make sure. Leigh then converted his own try before an old knee injury sneaked up on him and ended his game. We looked for the legend that is ‘Lord Shaw’ to come and save the day but alas he could not be found. With Bill Q resting and Mike replacing him, our only option was to borrow a player from the opposition which in true Rugby style Banbury did, to their peril it seemed he was having the best game of his life and after a great run from the backs he found himself going over the line to score against his own team! But… Not wanting a “shoeing” in the shower dropped it as he went down, lucky for us he dropped it backwards and a quick thinking Martin Jones jumped on it to get Witney a second try, in all a much better second half on a very hot day against a strong side. The score, as is often the case does not reflect the game.. so lets hope some of the boys show up for a bit of training and we can work as a team in the first half as well as the second for when they return to us.

Grove 3 – 18 Witney
In horrible conditions for the first match of the season, there were a number of plusses for coaches Campbell and Harper to work with. Grove is always a tough place to play and come away with anything so to come away with a much changed side and win fairly convincingly was a great effort. Witney could not really have started better though as Adam Hicks caught the kick off as Grove were caught napping and his surging run took Witney deep into Grove’s half. Although Grove absorbed the initial pressure they soon gave away a penalty and Henry Lamb slotted the three points. The home side responded with a couple of decent thrusts into Witneys half but some good tackling by Tom Harper thwarted a promising attack. Witney soon found themselves back in the Grove half as some indiscipline from the home side allowed Henry Lamb to pin them back in their own 22 and this continued for much of the match which put pressure on themselves. From the lineout Witney drove on and infield where Owen Fowler showed great strength and skill to barge over for the opening try. Lamb missed the conversion and then Witney had to reshuffle as Tom Harpers hamstring pulled and he limped off the park.
The home side were the stronger in the set piece, especially the scrums but Witney were superior in the lose and were far more positive in the ruck situation and the back row of Marc Copperwheat (right), Charlie Bennett and the outstanding Carl Campbell (left) were more and more influential. The two sides exchanged penalties but Witney enjoyed more of the pressure and looked the more likely to score before the interval. This they did as the forwards set up a good platform and the ever young Matt Brocklebank charged through the Grove no 9 to score, Lamb adding the extras right on the 40 minutes.
With breeze behind them the home side knew they still could get back in the match but they needed an early score. They tried to barge through the middle but James Lamb and Aaoron Tustain were very solid in the midfield and it seemed any tackle that was missed, Carl Campbell would sweep in from nowhere and do the necessary. As the match wore on the rains started to come down and both sides made more mistakes but Grove’s were more telling as they were chasing the game at this point. Witney had late chances through James Lamb and Matt Brocklebank but both failed to keep hold of the bar of soap with the tryline beckoning. A good win and a number of players did their chances of making the first League XV no harm at all. The selectors will have a few interesting decisions to make with the home fixture at Buckingham next Saturday which will kick off the Southern Counties North season.

VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE
A lot of good things with a much changed line up and some people really stepping upto the mark. Carl Campbell was outstanding in his work rate and Marc Copperwheat was a real powerhouse in the lose. Adam Hicks really threatened everytime with ball in hand and Aaron Tustain was very solid in midfield defence but also showed some really nice touches with ball in hand too. Mark Fuller stood in well at hooker and Stutty played well in the unaccustomed no 9 shirt after a slow start. All in all though everyone had some good moments and those absentees from last weekend may find they are unable to force their way back into the starting lineup with Buckingham. A couple of low points too with Tom Harpers hamstring looking a “bad one” and influential forwards Owen Fowler also limping off the park late on, lets hope that he will be ok for next week.

Witney 2nds 29 - 0 Fairford
A very good performance from a team that had many new combinations. Shorts started at scrum half and though there were some shaky moments he also got the backs moving superbly at times. The pack slowly gained control over Fairford and Witney had just one score to show at half time thanks to a try from Kenna. The second half saw John Blacker leave with a suspected broken hand and George Bibby came on at fly half. A recognised fly half made a big difference as he enabvle d Witney to play in the right areas of the pitch.
Robbie Mills had a great game at inside centre putting in the first big tackle of the season that got a great reaction from the die hard crowd of "oHHHH that's got to hurt!" James Barnett played solidly at number 8 supported by Damian and Hooky. The pressure began to mount and Fairford conceeded numerpus penalties. Witney in the end could have won by more but a solid start to the season with two wins out of two.
