Wallingford will provide a stern test Couldn't really have wished for a better start than the win against Marlow but the team knows things will only get tougher and that starts with Saturdays visit of Wallingford who have been playing at this level for a couple of season now. Jake Thomas (right) forces his way back into the otherwise unchanged squad. Its another home match and so the lads know how important it is to have a good record at Hailey Road and will, I'm sure, apply themselves accordingly. The 2nds also had a great start last week and are back on the road this week against Buckingham, the 3rds are at home against Amersham & Chiltern, while the 4ths provide the first League opposition to Alchester. Saturday 11th September 1st XV v Wallingford (H) LEAGUE, Meet 1.45, KO 3.00 (Shirt and Tie for after the match!) (from) Gouldie, Lambourne, Thomas, Strutt, *Lamb(J), Monks, Lamb(H), Campbell(G): Fuller, Richardson, Collins(S), Richens, Hicks(J), Fowler, Copperwheat(M), Muller, Campbell(C), Rowles 2nd XV v Buckingham 2nds (A) LEAGUE – 12:30 meet – Training Thursday. Great Start Against Marlow Five tries and a fine home win to kick the season off in a great way. Some nerves early on but the team settled and worked hard and in the end thoroughly deserved their win. The second also won against the same opposition to make it a great start for the club. Next week, the thirds and fourths join in the action and its also the "Pigstock" weekend too. CLICK HERE for the report.

And So It Begins ..... Pre-Season is now over and the lads face their first test in South West 1 East, against high flying Marlow who pushed for promotion for much of last season. The warm up matches have been good but today the team knows they will have to raise the bar. A couple of unavailabilities and injuries but with most players available, selection must have been tough with a number of players from the 2nds putting themselves into contention with good pre-seasons. "Old Boys", Phil Gouldie, Marc Copperwheat and Tom Harper (all left) return to the squad after Uni. In the other match, the 2nds travel to Marlow, good luck to new coach Andy Merriman and new skipper, Copper. Saturday 4th September 1st XV v Marlow (H) LEAGUE, Meet 1.45, KO 3.00 (Shirt and Tie for after the match!) Inter Club Trial - Competition for Places Is Good ! The game went very well, Phil and Goz had picked two evenly matched sides and all involved gave their all, with no serious injuries suffered.Their is a lot of competion for places this year and selection on Tuesday should be very interesting. Special mentions should go to Jamie Burke, who showed great skill behind the BBQ, well supported by Robbie Mills and Tim Muller. The chairman also enjoyed the afternoon and was proberbly the BBQ's best customer.

2nds Off To A Flier Against Brize Norton On a sun drenched August evening, the 2nds took on Brize Norton - well thats how I would have liked to have started the summary! In reality it was very wet and by the end, pretty cold but surprisingly, some good rugby was played. The match was played in 4 quarters of 20 mins a time and Brize looked the better side in the first period with Witney generally on the back foot and giving away too many penalties. Brize opened the scoring but Witney crept back in the match with one right on 20 minutes. Brize again looked bright in the second period but Witney scored to take the lead. Coppers team gradually gained ascendancy in the last two periods and ended up 34-5 winners which flattered them but certainly by the end they were well on top but fair play to both sides for trying to play some rugby in those inclement conditions. What was learned ? Not too much but some good efforts individually and collectively and some match time for all the lads was the key thing.
Angels Kick Off Against Guidford Ladies The girls are in a new League this season and have their first match on 3rd October against Guidford ladies. They also have a trial game on 26th September away at Old Reds.

Gentle Reminder!
See Chris Clinkard for more details.
Look on Facebook .... or hopefully, in the papers this week. |
Grove Trial Goes Well The season kicked off last Saturday with a "friendly" trial match against local rivals Grove and Witney came out on top after four 20 minute sessions, winning 34-0. A lot to please coaches Phil Harper and John Campbell but let's not get carried away as the boys well need to raise the bar but a good start none the less. A couple of second teamers from last season really putting down their markers and competition for places really hots up, which can only be a good thing. Pre-Season Fixtures Aug 25th (Weds) 2nd XV v Brize Norton (KO 6.45) Aug 28th Inter Club trial matches (and BBQ afterwards)
Development Update Pitch One Development: The pitch is to be sprayed on Tuesday the 17th August in preparation for the work to start – this is to kill off the existing grass and weeds, if this wasn’t done, they could come up through the new surface. - The pitch will therefore be out of use for a 24Hr period – i.e. it is out of bounds. - Work to dig up the pitch will commence on the 24th August with the work scheduled for completion by the 17th September. - The pitch will be ready for use again by the start of the 2011/2012 season – again it will be out of bounds until further notice. Other Development Plans Other plans being investigated are: - New flood lights for the training area between pitches 2 and 3 are on order. - Plans for new fencing around pitch 1 continue. - Work continues into looking at a new patio with doors which will open directly onto it.

Leading referee Toft dies aged 79 For those that didn't see this sad news on the Oxford Mail web site. He was often up at Witney and was always good for some banter! From Ox Mail..... Brian Toft, a leading figure in the Oxfordshire Referees Society for more than 40 years, has died at the age of 79. Born and raised on the Wirral, he played as a flanker for Sale before joining the Liverpool Society of Rugby Football Referees, finishing up in as an A List referee. On moving to Haddenham, near Thame in 1969, he joined the Oxfordshire Society of Rugby Football Referees where he remained an active member until his death. During his 41 years association with Oxfordshire, he moved from refereeing to becoming a national panel advisor. In addition to his touchline activities, he found time to coach and mentor referees and other advisors throughout the south-west region. In 2004 he chaired Oxfordshire RFU's governance and discipline committee. Two years later, his contribution to rugby was recognised when he won Oxfordshire Sports Partnership volunteer-of-the-year award He saw that as one of his proudest moments. Colin Baldwin, chairman of the Oxfordshire RFU, said: “Many of the players still playing the game and hundreds of those that have stopped playing, will remember him with warm affection. “The Oxfordshire Committee members and I will definitely miss his dry sense of humour.” |

Over the last few years several age groups have been to Adams Park at High Wycombe to watch Wasps home games and be involved with their Matchday Tag rugby and Coachclasses . This agreement looks to formalise the relationship and involve our whole club and all age groups. As a result of the partnership we will benefit from fundraising support, support at our own festivals and events, 2 coaching classes at Witney for our coaches each season, opportunities to host Wasps Coachclasses, discounted community tickets for Wasps home games, as well as continuing with Matchday Tag rugby and Coachclasses/tournaments.

Six On The Bounce - Referees Award At the referees dinner on Friday last, we were presented with the Max Semour Trophy for the 6th year in sucession, making it 7 times in the last nine years in total. The Shield is presented each year to the Club that referees whom collectively vote as being hospitable, with good reception and facilities, fair minded in their approach, good with communications before and after the match etc. The President went out of his way to stress that referees visiting Witney at all levels from M&J to firsts and including the Angels, all gave good reports at each level. So this is a Whole Club achievement, not just one side, and each should be congratulated, including the fixture secretaries who are the first point of conatct.
Next Season, with the 1st XV playing at level 6, we will in fact have fewer Oxfordshire Referees week on week, so it will be up to all the other sides to maintain our claim that we are the Best Club for referees to visit. We would like to get it up to 10 straight wins. Well done all concerned. Pat Hall Witney RFC President

County Cup Final - A Lesson Learned! The boys could not be accused of giving anything less than 100% and we may have outnumbered the Chinnor supporters but that apart, the afternoon was a bit of a lesson for the team as they were well beaten by a very clinical Thame outfit. The final score of 68-0 was a bit harsh on Witney but apart from two Ed Mitcham penalty attempts, we never really threatened to break the "nil". Chinnor were stronger in every department and theit "ten" bossed the game well as they executed everything at pace. Witney never gave up but losing Owen Fowler to a yellow card after 15 minutes saw Chinnor notch 21 points and from then on it was a case of damage limitation. The boys never gave up though and tackled all afternoon but gaps eventually came and were ruthlessly exploited. It was great to get to the Cup Final though and it has been a magnificent season which the club can look back on with huge pride. For the Oxford Mail Match Report CLICK HERE.

Harper hails 'great' title (from Oxford Mail) Celebrations continued long into the night after Witney claimed the Southern Counties North title with a 19-12 victory over Amersham & Chiltern. More than 600 people witnessed Witney seal a place in South West 1 East, then the players continued their celebrations with the annual ‘boxer short night’ in the town. Head coach Phil Harper, who had a “quiet Sunday” to recover, said: “Winning the title was great. “It was nice to do it with a win rather than on points difference. “The atmosphere was brilliant. They brought quite a few supporters over, so it was really good day out.” Harper added: “At 14-12, it was very tense, but we got a breakaway try from Ed Mitcham at the end.” Harper said that the title had been a work in progress. “This is the third year that we have been together as a team and coaches,” said Harper. “Because of that continuity, the way we play has been developing. “I just think it was a question of time before we got it right. “We had a good end to last season and pushed on from there. “We set out our stall at the beginning to be strong in defence and the set-piece and that has been the basis.” |
Champions! A superb match and superb occasion saw the top two sides in the League put on a great show for the large Hailey Road crowd. A spectacular Ed Mitcham try after a 60 metre break from Gareth Campbell sealed victory in a match that was in the balance right the way through. Amersham were never going to win by the 38 points they needed for the title but both sides were hungry to finish the season on a winning note and gave everything on the park. Well done to all involved over the season! Thoughts now turn to the Cup Final next Sunday against Chinnor at Iffley Road - places on the coaches and Cup Final T-Shirts available at the club. Message from Hungary Dear Witney RFC! I hope I'm writing to the right adress. My name is Gergely Mézes from Pécs, Hungary. I'm the manager of the Pécsi Indiánok SK Rugby Team(Pécs Indians Sport Club Rugby Team). When I was younger I played for the Battai Bulldogok RFC(Batta Bulldogs) against your team twice in England and you also travelled to Hungary during the mid 90s. I checked a name list and the names of Andy Gosling and Dave wicks were familiar, maybe they remember me too. I stayed in Dave's home when Batta Bulldogs RFC were on tour. If you are interested we would like to invite your team to Hungary to play, but this time to the city of Pécs. We can also organize other matches for you with other Hungarian teams too. Later if it is possible my team would also travel to England for a rugby tour. It would be nice if Andy and Dave could also come, we would indulge in nostalgia:) I'm waiting for your answer. Best Regards: Greg(Pécs Indians) Mézes Gergely From Ed: And I bet "nostalga" is not all they would indulge in !

They will look cool but have some reliablilty fun Iam sure. We are well settled now. Boy is it hot. One has to just embrace the sweating. Not been to Saigon Geckos RFC yet as am awaiting mouldies and gumguard delivery from the old man next month. It is yoga at the moment... Pass on congrats to Jez and the boys on the rest of the season and to James for taking on the captaincy. Say hi to the club and tell Norm he would love the markets out here for picking up some bargains! Plenty of room in the new pad for visitors. Even have all the South African sports channels for some reason so can keep up with all the sport. Missing the gang and would love to take JC out for the day in this crazy city, his eyes would pop out as it is such a sensory overload. Thanks for keeping the website so up to date so I can keep abreast of the chaps. Cheers, Wil
